West Sumba

Activity

During ICOP 2024, students and local communities in two villages in West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, collaborated to address local needs and support community development. Activities focused on agricultural irrigation, children’s literacy, access to clean water, family nutrition, hygiene education, and organic waste management. Through these efforts, students worked alongside local communities to respond to identified needs in each village.

Weihura

Agricultural Irrigation & Children's Learning

Activities in Weihura focused on agricultural irrigation and children’s learning. The planned physical improvements included a spiral water pump powered by river currents as an alternative to diesel-powered pumps for agricultural irrigation, as well as improvements to the village reading garden. Educational activities for children included reading, counting, and learning through play. Mothers were also invited to participate in training on preparing nutritious supplementary food for their children.

Baliloku

Clean Water & Community Health

Activities in Baliloku addressed clean-water access in one of the village’s hamlets through plans for a clean-water well and water storage facilities. The program also included training for mothers on preparing nutritious supplementary food, hygiene education for children on proper handwashing and toothbrushing, and compost-making training. The composting activity aimed to turn organic waste into useful and economically valuable resources that could support local agricultural and plantation potential.
