West Sumba

Activity

During ICOP 2023, students and local communities in two villages in West Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara, collaborated to address local needs and support community development. Activities focused on agricultural irrigation, children’s literacy, access to clean water, family nutrition, hygiene education, and organic waste management. Through these efforts, students worked alongside local communities to respond to identified needs in each village.

Tourism Support, Nutrition & Local Livelihoods

Through targeted workshops on crafting alternative livestock feed using locally sourced ingredients and culinary sessions for posyandu cadres on preparing seafood, participants empowered local residents and strengthened community livelihoods. Key initiatives also focused on enhancing tourism infrastructure at Watu Bela Beach by installing navigational maps, directional signage, public waste bins, and recreational amenities. To preserve cultural heritage and foster community well-being, students helped restore traditional village fencing, offered educational tutoring for early childhood and elementary students, and conducted stunting prevention outreach that provided nutritious supplementary food to vulnerable households.
