Located in Wonocolo District in the city of Surabaya, each ICOP 2021 destination is a single neighborhood (RW), chosen together with RW administrators, community leaders, and urban village heads. Surabaya was still in a red zone during the pandemic, so each community balanced everyday needs, from greening and waste management to small businesses and children’s learning, with the need to stay safe. These neighborhoods hold creative potential and local initiatives that students helped to grow.
Margorejo
RW 01, Margorejo Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 01 Margorejo is a creative neighborhood with a medicinal plant garden (Taman Toga) in RT 06, an existing waste bank, and lively Tari Remo and silat groups. Residents also make crafts such as pots from used tires, tie-dye shirts, and art from waste.
RT 01 remains barren and prone to standing water, and residents want a proper waste-sorting system and more waste education for children and teenagers. The community also needs a distinctive kampung brand, a UMKM catalog, and a place and promotion for its performing arts. The urban village head hopes for a design for a solar-powered “artificial rain” project.
Jemurwonosari
RW 04, Jemurwonosari Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 04 Jemurwonosari is home to a Kawasan Rumah Pangan Lestari (KRPL), a sustainable food garden with hydroponics and family medicinal plants, set on limited land. It has the potential to grow into an educational tourism spot.
The area needs a clearer layout that makes the most of its narrow land, a comfortable meeting area, and trained local managers who can run educational tourism with confidence. Promotional materials and branding for the neighborhood’s small businesses are also needed.
Sidosermo
RW 05, Sidosermo Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 05 Sidosermo is known for its green house, the neighborhood’s flagship that has represented it in community competitions. Space in the alleys of RT 01 to RT 03 is limited, and small businesses in the urban village include Tiara Handycraft, which employs people with special needs.
The green house needs better design and care to become a tidy, educational reading garden, and children need safe places to play during the pandemic. Small businesses need branding, packaging, and promotion, and the urban village head asked for special attention to Tiara Handycraft.
Bendul Merisi
RW 01, Bendul Merisi Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 01 Bendul Merisi is preparing to join the Surabaya Smart City competition next year, with riverside land that could become a green space. The neighborhood already runs a waste bank program.
Children needed internet access to study online during the pandemic. The neighborhood also needs support to prepare for the competition, empower its small businesses, and strengthen its waste bank.
Siwalankerto (RW 05)
RW 05, Siwalankerto Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 05 Siwalankerto, in the urban village where Petra Christian University is based, has a green house and an active greening movement, with alleys preparing to join neighborhood competitions.
The community needs support to set up and arrange the green house and its family medicinal plants, identify local small businesses and design product labels, and build a savings-and-loan system. Preparing for the Surabaya Smart City competition also requires careful planning.
Siwalankerto (RW 06)
RW 06, Siwalankerto Urban Village, Wonocolo District
RW 06 Siwalankerto also has a green house, and a community website previously created by COP 2020 students. Residents hope the green house can become a safe, comfortable, and beautiful zone with environmental, educational, and economic value, like the KRPL in Jemurwonosari.
The website needs to be revised so it is easier to operate, young residents want a productive creative community, and children need educational programs. The neighborhood also wants a mural that presents it as a place for education and community service.
