Activity

During ICOP 2021, students and local communities in Surabaya collaborated to respond to the realities of the pandemic. Across the six neighborhoods, students supported COVID-19 data and health campaigns, internet access for remote learning, appropriate technology, learning from home, and online support for small businesses, alongside greening and community-specific projects. Through these efforts, students and residents learned how to adapt together under limited conditions.

Margorejo

Green Spaces, Waste & Creative Identity

Biopore holes to reduce standing water, a five-category waste sorting system, and vertical gardens in RT 01 gave the neighborhood a greener, cleaner look, while the Taman Toga was developed further. Alongside this, residents and students worked on kampung branding, a UMKM catalog, waste education for children and teenagers, creative training in art and crafts with resale value, and a design and proposal for the solar-powered “artificial rain” idea.

Jemurwonosari

Sustainable Food Garden & Educational Tourism

Together with residents, the team mapped out the KRPL’s future as an educational tourism spot, from a master plan that makes the most of its narrow land and a planting app for urban farming, to paving the meeting area. Beyond that, the work covered training for the KRPL managers, a catalog or brochure of its services, modern promotion models, and branding for local UMKM.

Sidosermo

Play, Green Space & Small Business Support

Children and the environment took center stage in Sidosermo: limited land in RT 01 was greened, alleys became safe play areas, a catfish pond was added in RT 02, and the RW’s green house was reimagined as a tidy reading garden with a development master plan. For local businesses, the program offered branding, logos, packaging, promotion support, and a hard copy catalog and e-book for UMKM across the urban village, with special attention to Tiara Handycraft.

Bendul Merisi

Online Learning & Smart City Preparation

To keep children learning online, Wi-Fi was installed in the neighborhood, and preparations began for the Surabaya Smart City competition, including a green house on riverside land. The program also stood behind local UMKM and worked to strengthen the waste bank.

Siwalankerto (RW 05)

Green House, Local Businesses & Community Finance

The neighborhood’s green house and its surroundings got a fresh look, joined by family medicinal plants and vertical gardens in the alleys entering the competition. On the business and community side, local UMKM were identified and given product labels and logos, a savings-and-loan financial system was set up, and the neighborhood prepared for the Surabaya Smart City competition.

Siwalankerto (RW 06)

Community Space, Digital & Youth

A green house became a safe, comfortable, and beautiful zone, and a new mural presented the RW as a place for education and community service. In the digital and social space, the RW website from COP 2020 was revised, young resident’s creative community was brought back to life, and educational programs were designed for children.
